Lazy Mom Tip #34

Are you ready for another great Lazy Mom Tip?  Because I'm sure ready to give you one!  So whether you're ready or not, you're getting it!

Aren't I all nice and stuff?

I think so.

So here's our Lazy Mom Tip #34!

So what you're looking at here is a picture of a blanket and pillow that is next to my bed.  See?  You weren't crazy!  It IS what you thought it was!  Isn't that good news?

Now, WHY? you may ask is this stuff next to my bed?

Well I'm going to tell you.

Aren't I all nice and stuff?

I think so.

Lazy Dad and I were never fans of the whole "co-sleeping" thing with our kids.  Now I totally understand the different view points on it and I get that some parents out there actually do enjoy co-sleeping and that's cool.  It just wasn't for us.  Like, at all.

Part of the reason we didn't care for co-sleeping is also because of the fact that I got like NO sleep whenever a child did land in our bed.  The kicking, the poking, the I'm-afraid-I'm-going-to-suffocate-them-on-accident thing pretty much equaled no sleep for mom.

So one mom I knew that has five kids told me several years ago (I know, I can't believe I'm just now getting around to telling you this awesome tip!) about how she keeps a rolled up sleeping bag and a pillow tucked under her bedside table for the inevitable times that one of her kids wanders into her room in the middle of the night because they had a bad dream, they're sick or they just "can't sleep."  She said, and I quote, "Between the five of them, there's always one up for some reason!"

Now on behalf of this mother with five children who always has one up for some reason, let's all have a moment of silence for her.  She deserves it.

[a moment of silence]

Thank you.

So anyway, I thought this was brilliant.  I mean, isn't it?!

Uh, yeah.

So since then I've stashed a blanket and pillow by my bed (not necessarily a sleeping bag although we have hard wood floors and a sleeping bag would be cushier) and that's where our kids land when they are up in the night in our room.  Plus there's no more fuddling around in the middle of the night to go find a blanket and pillow for them.  I mean, who wants to do that?  Like, no one.

My kids know that the pillow and blanket are there and they know the drill.  Now mama gets her much needed beauty sleep and all is right in the world.  Amen.

So if you're in a state of unrest with kids up in the middle of the night and wanting to get in bed with you, then go get yourself a blanket and pillow and stash it next to your bed!  Believe me you'll thank me for it.

Because I fully expect to be thanked, you hear?

Aren't I all nice and stuff?

I think so.

  1. We use one of those foam chairs that folds out to a little bed. Most of the time, I don't even know my daughter is there until we get up in the morning.

  2. My parents used to do that with us. We don't do that because my husband wakes up at 4:30 for work and the kids would wake up and not go back to sleep.

  3. We've got friends with older kids who do the same as Tiffany - those fold-out chair/beds in their room. We'll probably do the same when my son moves to his big boy bed.

  5. My youngest wanted to sleep with us, nightly. He sweat like a pig!(except pigs don;t sweat- so I guess he sweat like a fully suited-up football player running laps in 103 degree weather?)
    soaked the sheets,
    Plus he kicked and flipped.

So I made a bedroll for him at the end of our bed (there was no room on the sides & I would have probably stepped on his when I got up to pee at 2AM, half asleep).
He slept at the foot of our bed for a couple years I think, LOL.

another nice thing about is - he could come & go as he pleased - so he'd get to where he'd just join us at 3 AM - never woke us- so it was good- he eventually 'weaned' himself from it.
