Lazy Mom Tip #49

Warning: You are about to witness what could possibly be the BESTEST Lazy Mom Tip ever. Because of this you may experience dizziness, crying, an uncontrollable need to hug someone, and possibly even fainting. All from the sheer joy of it. Consider yourself warned.

My lovely lazy moms. What I am about to share with you could possibly change your ever. loving. life.

Get ready to thank me.  In fact, you might as well go ahead and thank me now. Because it's THAT good.

Go ahead... thank me... I'm waiting.

How many of you have one of these sitting in your house right now?

You know, a laundry basket filled with socks?  Because I did for months and months and, well, months up until this weekend.  In fact, that's the very laundry basket pictured above.

But last week I decided I had had enough of this laundry basket of socks.  I hated how it mocked me every time I walked past it. I hated how it swallowed matching socks alive in it so you couldn't find a pair when you really needed it.  I hated how it brought about tension and discord to our mornings.

So. I came up with a plan. A plan to take her down!

I emptied all of the socks out and started sorting.... and sorting.... and sorting.

I threw out mismatched socks, socks with holes in them, socks that were so soiled they would never come clean even if I buried them in bleach.

Then, I bought everybody in my family one of these...

A lingerie mesh wash bag.

I also bought a package of these babies...

Drip dry hooks that I found at a local home improvement store.

Then I labeled everybody's bags and hooks with their fist initial (something we do often in our house) so I knew who's is who's....

And I gave each person their own bag to hang in their room somewhere...

Do you know why I did all of that?!  Huh? Huh?

So that each person can put their socks in them when they take them off each night!  The bags are big enough to hold a week worth of socks, so once a week I'll do a "sock call" and each person will zip their bag up, throw it down the laundry chute and I'll do a load with everybody's sock bags!

Everybody gets their sock bag back and they can do with them as they please!  Dump them in their drawer as is, or match them and put them away.  At that point I don't care! All I know is that I will no longer have one of these in my house taunting me!

No sorting!  No huge laundry basket full of socks!  No disgruntled mornings because you can't find a match!

Hmmm, I've never been called a genius before, but this might be an appropriate time to do so. Because THIS is genius I tell you, sheer genius (if'n I do say so myself).

AND the best part is... the lingerie bags only cost a dollar something each and a pack of 6 drip dry hooks were a dollar something as well! That means that for less than $10 I brought SANITY back to my laundry life. And THAT my lazy dears is totally WORTH. IT.

You're welcome.

P.S. I had to teach my kids how to unroll and straighten out their socks so they don't go through the wash that way.  I did this by doing the first load of socks "as is" and showed them how they didn't come clean or dry. That way they really understood why they should take the time to put their socks in their sock bags all straightened out.

P.P.S. Another item I make my boys put in their sock bags is their underwear.  They wear the same exact size, so I never know who's is who's. This way their socks and underwear all stay together.

P.P.P.S. You love me... don't you?

If you loved this Lazy Mom laundry tip, then you'll also love this one where I took back my couch from the laundry!

  2. Good idea! I have a laundry basket like that, but it's on purpose. See, my 3 boys all wear the same size socks. So, I threw out all the old socks and bought 5 packs of the exact same sock. So, all of their socks go in the same basket. When they get dressed, they just grab two socks and they always match!! :)

  3. That's awesome! My kids each have their own hamper, and do their own laundry, I do help the younger ones. But somehow, we STILL end up with a lost socks, and a sock basket. Don't ask me how! lol Thanks for the great idea!

  4. Stacey I do love this! Wish I had known about it years ago when the kids were all still here!! LOL... for my husband and I it's no big deal~ oh but DO I remember the "good ol' days!"

  5. Wonderful!! I am on my way to buy my own... or will be after work!

    ReplyDelete
  6. That is quite the ingenious plan. Especially showing the young ones how to do it themselves. My tip? Have your husband do all the washing, drying, sorting and putting away. I rarely touch the laundry. He ASKED to do it. That makes me a pretty lazy mom, doesn't it?
    Enjoy the day!

  7. Stacey, in honor of your post today I put a fun cartoon on my blog for you! Thanks for the fabulous idea. I may win the sock war yet!!!!! getjoy.blogspot.com

  9. Omg you're BRILLIANT. I'm adding these things to my list right now, right this very minute. <3

  10. That IS a great idea but wont work in my house. My 15 yr old does his own laundry, my 4 yr old (well we all know his socks and underwear) and my husband and I do our own laundry so no one gets anything mixed up or missing. And I never have THAT many socks in one basket, holy manoly! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  11. and now I finally know what I want for Christmas... let's usher in a new era of NOT tripping over the #@$* sock basket on a daily basis.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Brilliant idea ... and less aggravating than assigning "sort socks" to a child who tends to procrastinate. This way, anyone who complains, "I have no clean socks" can only blame him/herself. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I do love you! That's just pure genius!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is a good idea, except my boys take their socks of IN THE COUCH. Except one, who throws them under his bed. When I couldn't find ANYONES socks, I went to his room and FILLED, completely FILLED, a clothes basket with just socks.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Okay, you deserve some kind of award for that. Seriously! That is so cool!!!
    Dawn @www.5kidsandadog.com

  16. With four girls, I don't have this problem, as of this year anyways, it became cool to wear two unmatched socks. I think somewhere out there is another Lazy Mom grinning with pride for starting this trend!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. that is a lot of work. where does the "lazy" come in to play? I do not touch socks. I have never dealt with the sock, individually, in the laundry. I just grab them along with clothes and throw them into the wash. I refuse to handle them specifically. I just set the clean laundry basket in the room and they kids (and DH) fold and put away their own. I have done it that way since they were about 5. but I did fold clothes for them back then.

I hate socks. But the Mesh Bag is a good idea. just not the touching, sorting part. I wonder how quickly my boys would lose their Mesh Sock Bag. I might try this just to see how long they can do it.

  18. Ok I just fell in love with you!

  19. LOVE IT! That would be perfect here. I can't tell my socks from my oldest daughter's socks plus NO MORE MATING socks!!! GENIOUS!!!

  20. I am officially in love with you!!! my hubby and I hate our sock basket. Thanks for the idea, we will be putting it to use ASAP.

  21. That's pretty darn clever. I kinda love it! Right now it's just me, hubby and a baby and I still lose sock all the time. I may modify for my family. Maybe I just need one sock bag where we put all the socks? Thanks!

  22. do you wash them in the bags?? BEST TIP EVER!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for that tip! I think we just might have to try that one here!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks for the reply! I have a couple of those bags lying around! I'm going to start doing that today!!! You're my new favorite blog!! TRULY!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are a genius. Other than spending $ on the bags, my husband will be thrilled.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Genius! My husband LOATHES the sock basket so I'm all over this idea. I may even buy the bags & hooks as HIS Christmas gift :) As for the underwear- I found a great idea years ago that I've been using. My girls are 7, 4, and 1, we pass clothes down a few times before they die so underwear that belong to the oldest get one sharpie dot on the tag, if they get passed to the 2nd girl, a second dot is added, continue as needed. This not only makes laundry sorting easy for me, it helped the middle girl (when potty training) to know which way was front and which was back! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Brilliant. Genius. Worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why is everyone talking about The sock basket as if you only have one??? Oh my - I might try this!!! Linsey's sharpie dot idea in the undies is pretty genius too :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Here is the sharpie dot idea I posted about before too!

  30. We started doing this a year or so ago...worked wonders!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Awesome! Works well for those itty bitty baby socks that fly all over the house.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I started doing this when my first was a baby. I had nightmares about those teeny so is going astray. Stil doing it today. I even give those lingerie bags as baby gifts.

  33. Is there no end to your GENIUS????!!! That was the best tip EEEEVVVVEEERRRRRR!!!!! I{heart} you!

  34. Besides being hysterical you are totally a genius. I'm going to nominate you for the MacArthur Award. That's the one where they give you $1 million to do whatever you want because your a genius.

  35. OMG I love this...where did you get that bag from. It seems my dryer always eats socks and I also get the socks confused of who's who even with different brands...not too mention they also get lost because they just take them off and they go anywhere...getting them to put them in there would be a little challenge but this is the best....Following you from Stumble Tumble Tuesday....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Aside from buying everyone the exact white socks, this is a great tip1 good luck with it!

  37. Ditto on the comments. Great idea. I wish I'd thought of it years ago. I've got 8 kids. The three girls are far enough apart and different enough their socks aren't a problem. But 5 boys who wear pretty much the same size and style? I need to borrow your genius. I need to use that idea for the undies, too.

    Thanks! And great blog.

  39. I was just thinking how great it would be to throw the underwear in there too, when I got to your P.S. With 3 boys and 2 that are very close in size this is perfect. I will be adding these to my shopping list!
    Thanks!

  40. That's awesome. I'll have to do that when my little ones feet get as big as mine.

  41. You are the queen of laundry tips! What an awesome idea. My "laundry basket" full of socks is only a box since my kids are grown and gone. Once, I found 30 socks under my daughter's bed. Was wondering why my washing machine was eating so many socks and kept buying more. Arggg! Not sure if that child would have actually been able to comply on the laundry bag but I could have at least tried! (with a whip) ha

  42. From a Lazy AND Cynical Mom:

It's a very hopeful idea you have, but my kids would still leave their socks on the floor. If they don't reliably put their socks in the basket now, why would they put them in a basket of a different form? I can do you one better: Let them wear mis-matched socks.

  43. Oh.My.Goodness. Yes, I love you! My hubby and I only wear white socks and I dread doing a load of whites because then I have to match those socks, always find some without their mates, and then figure out which pair belongs to which person. I LOVE THIS!! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I finally just blogged about your brilliant idea. And I just bought my mess bags. I can't wait to do laundry now. hahaha!

  45. LOVE this! I will have to go out VERY soon and get the bags. Something that just started working for us with underwear (I also have two boys the same size) is that one wears briefs and the other boxer briefs. That way I don't even think, I can tell at a glance whose is whose.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is great! I was just lamenting this problem and my bouts of PTSSD (post-traumatic sock sorting disorder) :)

  49. O.k. at the risk of sounding dumb, here is my question, do you wash dark and white socks together in the bag?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Definitely genius! I pinned this! :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. What an amazing idea!! Thank you for sharing your brilliant mind. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I bought the largest mesh laundry bags I could find (sweater size) for each kid & all of their clothes go in. I drop the whole bag in the washer. I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  53. AWESOME idea! Where do you find the small lingerie bags?
    Thanks!

  56. Lazy Mom just makes it sound like moms all over are looking for ways to get out of work, when in fact, they are just working smarter. I think this site should be called "Smart Mom". If I came up with a way to streamline my job, I wouldn't want people to think it's because I'm lazy. My wife is anything but lazy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, don't take the "lazy" thing too seriously! It's all in good fun! :)

  57. The only thing I may add is buying 2 for each room. That way, one can be clean and one can be dirty. My boys wouldn't empty the bag before adding dirty socks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. That's such a good idea!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well, I just have to say that I am thrilled to know there is someone else out there that does this too. I've done this for quite a few years now. When the kids actually comply, it works great!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Awesome tip. Going to use this right away. Thanks for posting.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Unfortunately, my children are like their lazy mom...teaching them to do something new, may in fact be more difficult than actually sorting all those socks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. not to be redundant but this is BRILLIANT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh my! Where has this idea been my whole married life?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I sorted 21 pairs of socks just an hour ago. Your post will change my life! Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. YES! Brilliantness and I thank you in advance! Can't wait to implement!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yup, that's a genius tip. Thanks a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I know this is an old post, but its a great idea. My solution when my son was young was to only buy him one type of sock , so they were all the same. no matching required. hahaha... lazy yes.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Great plan...but how do you actually get them to do it? I have these grandiose ideas tt i never get them to follow throigh with...then i feel like an epic failure!

    ReplyDelete
  69. This is so brilliant. Believe it or not I've dreamed of this solution for years! And always just procrastinated implementing it. Then I thought I'd be a big hero to the world and do it and blog about it but decided to google it first and see if anyone else was as intelligent as myself! LOL so there goes my ingenious plan BUT I have a little tweak to my plan. I provide each member TWO bags each and two wall hooks. One hook is labeled clean and the other dirty. So the dirty bag when full gets washed and then put on the clean hook. That way I don't have to ever ever touch the socks! And as for the kids unrolling them completely, we are still learning that tedious technique ;)

    ReplyDelete
  70. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! My husband hates it when our son "borrows" his socks. Sonny boy claims that he has NO socks. Yup we are that neglectful. in reality his socks are lost in the black hole that is called his room. I had to buy new socks it reminded me that I had pinned this idea so along with the new socks I bought the lingerie bags. The funniest part was when I got home handing over the bag (still in the packaging) to my son. The picture on the bag showed ladies undies and bras and he was not too sure that something for ladies unders should go in his room. Haha! I assured him that it would be fine. I just threw the bags in the laundry for the first time last night. I can't wait until I fold later today and get to just hand him his bag of clean socks. And I really can't wait to hand my husband HIS bag of clean socks that have touched no other foot. ;)

  71. You are amazing! I do have a basket sitting around with lots and lots of socks! Thank you for bringing back my sanity!
