Y'all.
I'm in love.
With some vegetables.
Namely, the Super Sprowtz!!!
Have you heard of them? Have you seen them?? Have you experienced all their vegetabley goodness???
The Super Sprowtz from Super Sprowtz on Vimeo.
I love them!!!
When my kids were toddlers I wanted to teach them the difference between good food and bad food. So I printed off a bunch of clip art pictures of various foods on a magnet sheet, cut them all apart and then let my kids play with them on the refrigerator.
Here's the remnants of those magnets (lost the "bad food" label!)
I would also tell my kids that if they ate good foods it would give them super powers.... Like if they ate broccoli it would make them super strong! So I was super excited when I found out about Super Sprowtz recently!
Super Sprowtz is the brain child of Radha Agrawal. Who has produced a line of books, videos, puppets, games, etc... that teach your kids the power of vegetables in a entertaining, yet educating kind of way! Or as they like to call it... vegucation!
I received these two books for my kids. "The Super Sprowtz Origins" shows how some regular vegetables turn into super heros! And the board book "Super Sprowtz" introduces each vegetable hero and their "super powers."
In the back of each book there is a list of vegetables and how they are good for your body.
You all have GOT to spend some time on Super Sprowtz's website. I entertained myself for quite a while on there! (Wait. Did I just admit that out loud?)
Oh, and show your kids these super fun heros! They are too cute.
Oh, and let them play some games too (something I also entertained myself with).
Can you tell I'm loving me some Super Sprowtz??
Well, you can too! Because someone is going to win some Super Sprowtz books of their very own!

ReplyDeleteDo you feel that you are teaching your kids enough about healthy foods?
ReplyDeleteThis has been a goal of mine since I decided I wanted to have children. Presley is here and at 5 months old, we are introducing foods. I am thrilled about it. She loves almost everything we give to her. And each time its time for a food (2x a day for now). I talk about what she is eating while feeding her and how it is good for her body to grow big and strong. I really hope to continue to teach her healthy eating habits and a love for fresh local foods and yummy fruits. I want good healthy eaters in our house. My husband agrees. I think it is also about re-teaching us. It's so easy as an adult to just choose a bowl of mac and cheese for dinner, vs. a balanced meal. But we want to set good examples, eat a balanced meal together for dinner and show her (and future babies) how eating healthy makes your body feel good.
I am teaching my 11 month old what good food is by raising her as a pescatarian. she eats mostly veggies and her favorite meal is baby chili with cheese and organic sour cream. it's messy but soooo yummy!

ReplyDeleteI do not feel like I am teaching my kids enough about veggies. I can only get Skyler to eat salad, corn and cucumbers. I need help with the 13 month old. The books would be GREAT tools!

ReplyDeleteYes, my daughters know which foods are good and which are bad. This is why my youngest waits until I'm not near to sneak a "bad" food. I've never known of her to sneak a good food!

ReplyDeleteI always get strange looks in the grocery store checkout line when my grandson is begging for apples, grapes, strawberries, etc... One cashier told me she's only ever heard kids beg for candy like that. :o) He has to hold his bag of fruit on his lap while we go to the car.
ReplyDeleteI try to teach my grandson that there are no bad foods. All foods are good in moderation. I feel that witholding treats completely will just make them want them more. The "forbidden fruit" theory. lol
I don't feel like I am teaching them enough about healthy foods. These books look like they'd do the job.

I feel like my husband and I are really trying hard to teach our kids about healthy foods. We regularly take the kids to the farmers market and let them pick out fruits and vegetables for meals.

ReplyDeleteWell, my son is still young for formal teaching, but I am teaching him healthy choices by...only giving him healthy foods, except as a treat he'll get a couple M&M's or a bite of cake at a party.

ReplyDeleteWe recently began making small changes to our kids eating habits and are trying to think more healthy. We decided to start with small steps so the kids would be more accepting and so far it has been successful.

We talk about what's in each food while we're eating. The boys (2 and 4) know that meat has protien, bread has carbs, and which veggies/fruits have which vitamins. It's something I've always been interested so I passed it on to them from a very early age. My older prefers fruit to any sweets but my younger one is crazy about anything sugary.

Teaching portion control is the key to teaching children to eat right. Every food has a place in our diet, as long as it is in moderation.

Yes I think so and now that they are getting older they do chose their own and sometimes the teen not so well! the younger at 12 loves fruits

We started them out eating healthy and keep snack candy and soda for special treats.
ReplyDelete"Do you feel that you are teaching your kids enough about healthy foods?"
ReplyDeleteYes; it's a continual dialogue, though, not a one-time lesson. Do they eat healthy enough? No. Do they have eating DISORDERS? No. Are we making progress towards healthier eating? Sloooooowly. But yes.
no i do not feel that i am teaching my kids enough about healthy foods but i do keep them in the house and we eat healthy foods most of the time

I feel that I am teaching my kids enough about healthy foods but can always do a little more
ReplyDeleteYa know, I started out doing great with both kids. Homemade food, whole grains, no sugar (they're both hyper enough on their own, truly), fruits and veggies...Kendra was an incredible eater until she turned 2. I can't get her to eat a vegetable to save her life now, and it's 16 months later. Liam at 18 months likes peapods and edamame, but still prefers to mostly subsist on milk. He eats more than just that, it's just not a very wide variety. Hopefully one day they'll come around. I'm hoping that growing our own produce this summer will help encourage them to eat healthier.
ReplyDeleteYes because it's the way I cook.. it's what they know.

I think we are doing okay. My kids will ask if they have had enough protein for the day before they have a treat. It helps that they also love fruits and vegies though!
