Because Painted Wood is Pretty!

Howdy, Lazy Decorators!

It's Me again--
here to give you another great decorating tip.

I have to be honest:
I've been a little worried about posting this
particular tip.
I almost talked myself out of sharing this tip.
Not because I want it all to myself...
but because there might be a few dozen of you
who get mad at me and won't like me anymore.

Are you ready?
Let's all take a deep breath...shall we?

Many of you have very old furniture.
Maybe your mother passed it down to you when
you got married.
Or, maybe you're like me, and you
buy most of your furniture at garage sales.
At any rate, you have furniture from the
70's and 80's.
This, in and of itself, is NOT a bad thing!!!
This is a wonderful thing!
You've saved your family money!
Good for you!

But.
Here's the problem.
Many of you lazy, lazy people just.stop.there.

No, no, no.
If you have furniture from the 70's or 80's,
Honey Child, it's time to paint it!

Life is too short
to have to look at
ugly things!

Let me show you an example:

This is my table and chairs, circa 1974.
I don't have a picture of the table before I painted
it black, about 7 years ago, but imagine
it being just as ugly as the chairs.
Yeah, there ya go!
You've got a picture now, don't you?

So, I painted the table and the china cabinet
right after I bought them at
a garage sale.
But I left the chairs the way they were
because
1) I hated the fabric and
didn't know how
 to reupholster them
2) I hated the dated design of the chairs.
So, I used chair covers to
 hide their ugliness!
{sorry, I don't have a picture of them with the chair covers}

A friend of mine encouraged me
to take the slip covers off and
KEEP
them off!
I'm so glad I did!
That gave me the inspiration I needed
to turn those horribly dull chairs
into
WOWZA!

Here's the after:

All you need is a little bravery
and some spray paint
to get the beautiful furniture you dream of!

{if you don't know how to reupholster your
seat, here's a great tutorial}

So, go forth, Lazy Decorators!
Go forth and be brave!

Until next time,
Happy Decorating!

  3. WOW!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! It really looks great! I just got a cool vintage chair that someone left outside to throw away ;) But the fabric is in dire need of a fixing...only I had never reupholstered a chair before so I was going to google a good tutorial and thanks to you now I don't have to go searching! Thanks I'm so excited to try it out :)

  4. I'm not mad at ya! I recently painted a table I inherited from my aunt. It was in rough shape after years of use and abuse. I was nervous but figured if I didn't do something it was headed for the dump. I painted it barn-red, sprayed it with poly and now it sits on my porch with a beautiful basket that holds all my grandson's "treasures" he finds on our walks.

I have also re-upholstered a family heirloom rocking chair. I had watched my father do it YEARS ago and when it came into my possession, I just went for it. You never know what you can do until you try!
