1. Thanks for putting up with all my Texas posts. Although, I may have a few more here and there in future weeks.
So consider yourself warned.
2. I don't know if you heard on the news or not, but this weekend Barbie's car broke down.
It made me happy to know that her perfect little world wasn't so perfect after all.
And then I realized she was fixing the car herself.
And then I disliked her all over again.
3. Last week I took my 8 year old daughter to her first concert. I knew I had to when she flipped out in the car while listening to a K-Love commercial about Toby Mac's "Hits Deep" concert.
"Ahhhh! Mom! Did you hear that?! TOBY MAC IS PERFORMING LIVE AT THE HUNTINGTON CENTER!"
And then I'm pretty sure she fainted.
(Okay, not really.)
We bought nosebleed tickets, but had lots of fun singing along to the songs together. Especially Toby Mac's "That's Me Without You" song. (It's our current favorite.)
Such a pumpkin.
4. Yesterday I wore my grandmother's scarf clip to church.
She was a Pastor's wife and died when I was 11. I had no idea how much it would mean to me to wear it, but it did. A lot.
My sweet Aunt gave it to me while I was in Texas.
Um, not my sugar cooking/famous dressing Aunt.
Or my British Auntie.
And, well, not my Aunt who's married to my Uncle that posed for the Nacogdoches mural.
ANOTHER Aunt. This one.
For clarification purposes, let's just call her the Aunt that taught me how to properly toilet paper houses, biscuit cars and fork yards.
What? Everybody needs an Aunt like that.
5. Speaking of this Aunt. She's married to my handsome Uncle who called me "lil' bit" growing up.
It was sweet to hear him call my daughter lil' bit, too.
And I should mention that when I asked my kids which of my Texas family members had the most country accent, they all voted for this Uncle of mine.
Which, could be due the fact that he's from a place in Texas called Blackjack. No lie.
At one point, as my mom and Aunt were taking my grandfather home after Thanksgiving dinner, my Uncle yelled after the car, "'Mon back! 'Mon back!"
My 11 year old son turned to me and said, "What did he just say?"
"He said," enunciating each word to him clearly, "Come. On. Back."
To which my son replied, "Uh, I didn't hear a C in there."
We laughed and laughed that I had to interpret the Texan into Ohioan for him.
6. Last night I had a hankering for some Christmas cookies. So I decided to browse through my other grandmother's Better Homes and Garden's Cook Book that my sugar cookie/famous dressing Aunt gave me.
This cook book is from 1945.
It was very fun flipping through it. Especially the supplemental insert covering wartime meals.
And I especially loved this!
Move over Rachael Ray! Better Homes and Garden coined 30-Minute Meals long before you did!
And the part that says, "Into an apron at 5:30–dinner's served at 6 sharp!" totally made me smile!
And there was a whole section on how to properly set your table for dinner every night and yet make it different from the previous night to keep it visually appealing.
Those were different times for sure.
7. Just for fun. Show of hands if you got a Better Homes and Garden cook book when you got married?
Here's mine.
8. Oh! And in case you are wondering, I didn't end up making a recipe out of the 1945 cook book. (Recipes weren't very lazy back then!)
So I went to an old stand-by that's quick and easy... no bake cookies.
And just ignore the fact that one was missing from the sheet already, mkay?

Loooove the laziness and also the 1945 cookbook. Got mine in early 70s but not a wedding gift. Think the most used recipes are Easy Meat Loaf and the Tapioca Pudding.
ReplyDeleteI'd be packin' my bags when I need to stay. I'd be chasin' every dream that blows my way...love that song!
