Ladies and Gents,
If you are looking for a way to motivate yourself to move more or you are on the search to find a unique Christmas present for a hard-to-shop-for or “health conscious” person, then this just might be the thing.
UP is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. This little wrist band is a powerful tool that helps you track how much you move, sleep and eat 24/7. For realsies.
I’ve been wearing the Jawbone UP non-stop for about three weeks now. And I’m pretty amazed at how much I’ve learned about myself. Especially my sleep!
But before I divulge all my deep-dark secrets, let me just give you a few details about the Jawbone UP.
Live Better. Start Now. Jawbone UP. Track your sleep activity, steps, calorie intake and more with the Jawbone UP wrist sensor and free mobile app. UP gives you meaningful, personalized insights so you can make lasting improvements to your everyday life.
First things first! You have to use the Jawbone UP with their app. If the app isn’t available on your smart phone or device (or you don’t have a smart phone… like my friend… *cough* Carrie *cough*), then you can’t use the wrist band. The app is available for free in both the Apple and Android app stores, but may not work with all devices, so double check it works with yours before you run out to Best Buy and get a wristband!
Once you have the app downloaded, simply walk through the prompts to set it up, slap on the wristband and it starts tracking!
Here’s a screenshot of my first day using the Jawbone UP:
I exceeded my sleep goal of 8 hours, with 8 hours and 25 minutes! SCORE!
I reached 76% of my goal of taking 10,000 steps.
I ate 1571 calories and drank 6 glasses of water.
Not bad. I was pretty pleased for my first day wearing the wristband! Of course, wearing it makes you WANT to do good, so that’s a total bonus. *wink*
Now here’s where it gets REALLY interesting and I show you all my deep-dark secrets….
You can click on each column to see more details about your sleep, movement and calories.
On this day, I didn’t quite reach my goal of 8 hours of beauty sleep. But I was excited that I woke up 0 times that night and actually fell asleep in 4 minutes! WOOT!
For me, the sleep details are the most interesting part of wearing the Jawbone UP. While it’s not medical advice, it is a really neat window into your sleeping patterns. And I was shocked to learn that my deep sleep was about half as much as it should be! (No wonder I’m so tired all the time!)
Now check this night’s sleep out, because I’ve discovered something pretty amazing…..
Notice that even though I woke up 3 times that night and I had a harder time falling asleep, my deep sleep was way better! You know why? I exercised that day!
Seriously, having the opportunity to learn more about my sleep using the Jawbone UP, I was able to discover that on days I exercised, my deep sleep improved dramatically.
Isn’t that interesting?!
Now, some of you may be wondering how the Jawbone UP can track what you eat? Well, that you do have to manually add in, but they have a very nice database and the option to scan a label directly off food packaging, so it’s really not that difficult to input.
Or you can connect the Jawbone UP app with other select calorie counting apps you may already use. Nice feature!
When you have entered your food for the day, you can see more details about your diet:
Phew! Just BARELY stayed under the carbs for the day! (This was a good day *ahem*)
Now, for those of you really interested in the details of your movement during the day, you will love the Move Summary screen.
On this day I came SUPER close to hitting my goal of 10,000 steps! And I was pleased with my “active burn” numbers.
You may be wondering how the Jawbone UP knows when you are exercising? There’s a small silver cap on one end of the band that you can do various types of presses to move your wristband into a different category of tracking.
For instance, for sleep mode, you press and hold till the moon lights up for a second:
In the morning, when I decide I’m awake enough to start my day, I press and hold again for awake mode.
I know what some of you are thinking! “I would NEVER remember to do that!” But I’m telling you the honest truth… I never once forgot to put my wristband in sleep/awake mode!
Back to tracking exercise… you simply short press, then long press the silver cap till the wristband vibrates. Then you go on your walk/run/whatever, then do those presses again to let it know you are done exercising.
Another feature I really like about the Jawbone UP is their short little motivational messages.
It’s always a good little tidbit of information that’s catered to you and your sleep, move, eat patterns.
Listen, people. I could go on for days showing you all of the features that are in the app. It truly is loaded! (Love the team area where you can add friends for motivation!)
But I’ll spare you all the details for you to discover yourself!
All in all, I’m very impressed with this little device and it’s ability to motivate me to sleep, move and eat better!
