The other day I was a bit behind on laundry.
Just a bit.
A TEENSY-WEENSY... okay, who am I fooling. I was way behind, people.
So off-the-cuff I said to my oldest son (who is 11), “If you help me with the laundry right now, I’ll give you computer time.”
And off he happily went to move the laundry over, start a new load and sort/hang up the clean ones.
Then yesterday, my son says to me, “Hey Mom. How ’bout this? Every time I do laundry, I earn 15 minutes of computer time?”
I don’t think I have to tell you what I was screaming on the inside.
“YEEEEEE-HAW!” *fires six-shooters in the air* “Woooohooooo!” *does a jig* “Free at last, free at last! Thank God All-Mighty, I’m FREE AT LAST! *praises God*”
“Sure. That sounds like a good idea,” I nonchalantly said to him.
He then proceeded to get ALL the laundry caught up. Glory. Hallelujah.
By yesterday evening, he was going around telling people to change into their pajamas and put their dirty clothes down the chute so he could start another load.
I’m not even lying to you.
THEN. This morning. He comes into my room and asks if he can strip the sheets off of his brother’s bed and wash them.
“Um, sure?” I said.
As I am sitting here typing this, he has asked me if he can earn more 15 minutes of computer time if he folds the laundry that’s been sorted into everyone’s baskets, and takes everyone’s “hang-up clothes” to their closets upstairs.
That’s when I realized, that we might need some ground rules.
So. Here’s what we’ve come up with so far.
My kids can earn 15 minutes of computer time every time they…
- unload the dryer.
- fold and put away the towels in the towel basket.
- hang up everyone’s “hang-up clothes” in their closets.
- fold and put away their clothes in their laundry basket.
I’m sure we’ll come up with some additional ones, as this Lazy Mom Tip (that was my son’s idea!) continues to evolve. But for now, this Lazy Mom is happy!
