At the beginning of this year I wrote a blog post sharing the crazy things I’ve learned living in snowy winters.
Here we are, almost two months later with gobs of snow still on the ground and more on the way! Needless to say, we’ve had some crazy winter weather this year, and so has the rest of the country.
One of the things I realized through this extremely cold and snowy season, is that my car was not roadside emergency ready. In fact, I didn’t even have a pair of jumper cables in my trunk. (Something I learned after my car wouldn’t start and I didn’t have my cell phone with me earlier this winter.)
And although most Americans do have lots of “junk in their trunk,” only 5% carry all the recommended emergency roadside equipment. FIVE PERCENT! Whoa. We are really unprepared, people!
So what SHOULD we carry in our cars? Good question! Here’s what State Farm® recommends:
- Hazard triangle (with reflectors) or road flares
- First aid kit
- Jumper cables
- Windshield scraper and brush
- Spare tire
- Blankets and extra warm clothing
- Cell phone and charger
- High-calorie, non-perishable food
- Road salt or cat litter to help with tire traction
- Brightly colored distress sign or “Help” or “Call Police” flag
- Candle/matches, lighter, and/or flashlight
- Tarp for sitting or kneeling in the snow for exterior work like a tire change
Now, don’t go thinking that just because we are heading out of winter and into spring that this means you shouldn’t pay attention to what’s in your trunk. In fact, you should still carry what is recommended during the busy summer driving season because you just never know where you’ll be or what the conditions will be when you’re on that road trip that leaves you stranded.
To help you be prepared, the good people at State Farm® want to help you start putting the right “junk in your trunk” by giving away this trunk safety makeover kit (worth $50 in value)!
